2012-02-29T12:39: Tacos Rule

The library just dropped a reminder about National Nutrition Month into the middle of five retweets about TacoConf.com.

2012-02-28T14:01: Time Nerd

My twice annual role in my company's change coordination is to remind everyone about Daylight Savings Time either extending or shortening our Sunday morning change windows, as I just did for some work being considered for 3/11. This has been a Public Service Announcement from your resident time nerd. (From the uncool suburban part of Gallifrey, you know.)

2012-02-27T18:57: In Theory, I'd Pass

I'm deriving the (well, "a") process of long division from principles so I can teach it to an adult that never learned so much as single-digit multiplication tables in grade school. I suck at math tutoring. Doing things like working backwards from algebra to arithmetic in from of the student is partly why. Protip: if your explanation of 4 ÷ 2 involves the letter ε, the parents are not going to invite you back next week.

2012-02-15T08:51: I Like Salad

193.4 after two weeks on the two-salad plan. It's actually been difficult to get up to 25g per day without adding any other kind of food. So I cheated more ... but it's less cheating now, just skipping slightly ahead within a phase.

What's next ... fresh cheese? Not something I'm interested in, but I guess I'll try a little.

2012-02-14T19:41: ValentimesDay

While I forgave the responsible party long ago, and have an almost perfect girlfriend now, I'm still playing Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding to honor the day.

I think a lot of people took the day off at work. Very boring.

Cable boxes are gone. Will have to look into my antenna placement idea when the weather indicates. No reason to even bother for several weeks.

If you didn't come here via Twitter, be aware that there's a silly reason for the title.

2012-02-11T10:19: Annual Taxman Cliche

The laptop dilemna: my laptop sits in the middle of my desk 364 days a year, and can be removed to actually write on the desk, e.g. when filling out tax forms. But the laptop has my financial records too. Whatever shall I do? Do I have to … clean off some of the rest of the desk?

Misc.:

  • They managed to invent a board game that you almost have to buy new, not used. $55?! But Risk Legacy almost makes me wish I spoke to human beings.
  • I got phone upgrades two weeks ago and got a couple different smartphones for @dragonjaze and I to try out. She is happy with one of them, and I decided I was not happy with the other. Not sure what my next move is. I basically got a BOGO deal, so there's no point in sending just the one back. It also has good resale value. I can also give up the deal on the phones and switch to a value plan that will save $30+ every month.
  • I don't need another phone, but it was nice to have something lighter. But I'm in a financial situation where it being nice to carry a couple less ounces isn't worth actually buying a $550-$700 phone.
  • I did spend $11 on a taxi last night. I wasn't dressed for walking home after the storm, between the wind and the unplowed walkways. Work held me up an hour in the morning, so I left late, and it cascaded into leaving an hour late and not getting a bus — but not two hours late and meeting @dragonjaze on her way home. I'll have to skip a lunch to offset that spending. Skipping a lunch will further reduce my personal insulation, too, which is supposedly a goal but which feels like a stupid one on a winter night.
  • We haven't had many winter nights this year. I don't know how anyone can complain about living here right now.

2012-02-01T13:19: Studying for OWLs

(I have Harry Potter 6 to watch before my DVR goes back ...)

194.4 this morning. That's two straight under my 195 intermediate goal, and I've been doing minor cheating* more and more, so it's time to move past induction! Ongoing Weight Loss starts out easy enough: eat a salad with lunch in addition to with dinner, or have vegetables served with dinner in addition to and not instead of the salad. Then it gets harder, as I have to return to actually counting the carbs instead of knowing that I have a budget of 6 per meal for lunch and dinner.  (Plus 4 for breakfast and 4 for the salad/veg. = 20)

* things like a single piece of dried fruit for desert, not like the hypothetical pizza that @dragonjaze thought she smelled when she walked in last night

Will probably drop to two weight updates a month after next week.
